Communities across Cumbria are being invited to take part in a series of free online workshops designed to help local people develop Community Emergency Plans and strengthen local resilience.
Community Emergency Planning helps communities prepare for and respond to emergencies such as severe weather, flooding, power outages, transport disruption and other incidents that may affect local residents. Having a plan in place can help communities respond more effectively during an emergency and support vulnerable residents when services are stretched.
These free workshops will provide practical guidance on:
- What a Community Emergency Plan is and why it matters.
- How to identify local risks and vulnerabilities.
- Mapping community resources, skills and facilities.
- Working with emergency services and local authorities.
- Developing and maintaining a practical emergency plan.
- Engaging volunteers and building community resilience.
The sessions are suitable for parish councils, community groups, village hall committees, volunteers and anyone interested in helping their community become better prepared for emergencies.
Community Emergency Plans are increasingly recognised as an important tool for helping communities cope during incidents such as flooding, storms, prolonged power cuts and other emergencies. They complement the work of emergency services by helping communities organise local support and communication when it is needed most.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experienced facilitators, ask questions and access resources that can help them develop a plan tailored to the needs of their own community.
The workshops are free to attend but booking is required.
For more information about Community Emergency Planning and to reserve a place on one of the workshops, please visit the ACT website or contact the ACT team directly.
By taking simple steps to prepare in advance, communities can improve their ability to respond to unexpected events and support one another during challenging circumstances.
