Fellrunner Village Bus – Keeping Rural Communities Connected

For more than 40 years, Fellrunner Village Bus has provided a lifeline for rural communities across the Penrith area. Operated entirely by volunteers, the charity runs scheduled bus services linking villages with Penrith and Carlisle, helping people access healthcare, shopping, public services and social opportunities while reducing rural isolation.

A community service built by volunteers

Fellrunner began in 1979 after commercial bus services were withdrawn from villages in the East Fellside. With support from the local community and ACT (then Voluntary Action Cumbria), volunteers established a community-run bus service that has continued to grow, expanding routes to meet the changing needs of rural residents. Today, around 25 volunteer drivers help operate a fleet of accessible minibuses serving communities throughout the Eden Valley.

Supporting everyday journeys

The service enables passengers to travel into Penrith five days a week and Carlisle on selected days, providing convenient access to:

  • Hospitals, GP surgeries and healthcare appointments
  • Shopping and banking facilities
  • Rail and onward bus connections
  • Employment, education and training opportunities
  • Leisure activities and community events

The buses are open to everyone, accept concessionary bus passes and cash fares, and provide wheelchair-accessible transport to ensure as many people as possible can travel independently.

More than just a bus service

Alongside scheduled routes, Fellrunner also offers monthly community excursions and private hire for local community groups. These trips provide valuable opportunities for people to enjoy new experiences, meet others and maintain social connections, helping improve wellbeing as well as access to essential services.

Making a lasting difference

Each year, Fellrunner provides thousands of passenger journeys across rural Cumbria. The service enables many older people and those without access to a car to continue living independently while supporting local businesses and reducing the need for private vehicle travel. Its long-standing success has been recognised through awards celebrating the outstanding contribution made by its volunteers and the positive impact the charity has had on communities across the Penrith area.

By combining dedicated volunteers with practical transport solutions, Fellrunner Village Bus continues to demonstrate how community-led transport can improve quality of life, strengthen rural communities and ensure that people remain connected to the services and opportunities they need.
