Bewcastle Hub – Bringing a Rural Community Together

Bewcastle Hub is a volunteer-led initiative supporting one of Cumbria’s most remote rural communities. Based at Roadhead Hall, the Hub provides a welcoming place where residents can meet, access information, enjoy local events and reduce the isolation often experienced in such a sparsely populated parish. With fewer than 400 residents spread across Cumbria’s largest geographical parish, the Hub plays an essential role in strengthening community connections.

Creating opportunities to connect

The Hub hosts regular community drop-in events, offering free refreshments alongside locally made produce, crafts and informal social opportunities. Monthly Hub events have become an important meeting place where residents can catch up with neighbours, learn about local services and enjoy activities that bring the community together. Throughout the year, additional Mini Hub sessions and themed events provide further opportunities for people to stay connected.

Supporting community life

The Hub works alongside a wide range of local organisations, helping to promote community activities, local businesses and parish events. It also provides practical support by sharing information, signposting services and encouraging volunteering across the parish.

Regular activities supported through the Hub include:

  • Monthly community drop-in sessions
  • Coffee mornings and social gatherings
  • Local produce and craft sales
  • Community information and signposting
  • Support for local events and volunteer initiatives

These activities help strengthen community resilience while ensuring residents have opportunities to meet throughout the year.

Powered by volunteers

The success of Bewcastle Hub relies on the commitment of local volunteers who organise events, welcome visitors and help coordinate activities. Their dedication has created a friendly, inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to get involved and contribute to community life.

By working together, volunteers have developed a valuable resource that supports wellbeing, reduces loneliness and celebrates everything that makes Bewcastle a unique place to live.

Looking ahead

Bewcastle Hub continues to evolve in response to local needs, building partnerships with community groups and encouraging greater participation across the parish. Through regular events, volunteering opportunities and practical community support, the Hub is helping to ensure that even one of Cumbria’s most rural communities remains connected, resilient and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
