Armathwaite Village Hall – A Historic Building at the Heart of the Community

Armathwaite Old School Hall has served as the heart of village life for generations. Originally built as the village school in the 1850s, the beautifully restored sandstone building has been transformed into a thriving community venue where people of all ages come together to learn, celebrate and connect. Managed by a dedicated team of volunteer trustees, the hall continues to evolve while preserving its rich local heritage.

A vibrant community hub

Today, the hall hosts a wide variety of activities and events throughout the year, creating opportunities for local people to socialise, stay active and enjoy cultural experiences close to home.

Regular activities include:

  • Community cafés and social gatherings
  • Exercise and wellbeing classes, including Zumba
  • Live music, theatre and concerts
  • Workshops, craft fairs and creative events
  • Community meetings and private celebrations

The hall also participates in the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, bringing professional theatre and live performances to rural audiences and enriching cultural life within the village.

Facilities for everyone

The hall combines historic character with modern facilities. It offers a spacious main hall accommodating up to 120 people, a smaller committee room for meetings, accessible entrances and toilets, an induction hearing loop, a modern kitchen and a restored garden that provides an attractive outdoor space for community events. These facilities make the venue suitable for everything from family celebrations and training sessions to concerts and community activities.

Powered by volunteers

The Old School Hall is managed entirely by volunteers who organise events, maintain the building and oversee ongoing improvements. Their commitment has helped preserve an important historic building while ensuring it continues to meet the changing needs of the community.

Recent projects have included extensive building renovations, improvements to the outdoor garden and plans to modernise the kitchen, helping secure the hall’s future for generations to come.

Looking ahead

The committee continues to invest in the hall as a welcoming, inclusive space where local people can meet, learn and celebrate together. By combining heritage with modern community facilities, Armathwaite Old School Hall demonstrates how volunteer-led community buildings can continue to thrive, providing lasting social, cultural and wellbeing benefits for the whole village.
