Greystoke Bus is a community-led initiative that has successfully campaigned to restore a regular bus service between Greystoke and Penrith after more than a decade without one. Led by local volunteers, the project demonstrates how communities can work together to improve rural connectivity, reduce car dependency and make everyday journeys easier for residents and visitors alike.
A community campaign that made a difference
The Greystoke Bus Group was formed in 2023 in response to the lack of public transport serving the village. Volunteers worked with residents, local organisations, transport operators and Westmorland and Furness Council to make the case for a regular scheduled service.
Their efforts resulted in the introduction of the new Stagecoach 105 service, reconnecting Greystoke with Penrith and providing access to employment, education, healthcare, shopping and rail connections.
Supporting sustainable travel
The return of the bus service is helping people choose public transport instead of relying on private cars. It offers benefits for local residents while also encouraging visitors to travel more sustainably when exploring Greystoke and the surrounding area.

ACTion with Communities in Cumbria has supported discussions around rural transport solutions, helping communities such as Greystoke explore practical ways to improve local connectivity. The success of the Greystoke Bus campaign demonstrates the value of partnership working between volunteers, transport providers and local authorities.
Looking ahead
The Greystoke Bus User Group continues to promote the service and encourage more people to travel by bus. By supporting regular use of the route and listening to community feedback, the group hopes to ensure the service remains a permanent part of the area’s transport network while encouraging more sustainable travel across rural Cumbria.
