Kirkby Stephen & District Walkers are Welcome is a volunteer-led community organisation that promotes walking, improves access to the countryside and encourages people to discover the outstanding landscapes of the Upper Eden Valley. Accredited as Cumbria’s first Walkers are Welcome town in 2009, the group has helped establish Kirkby Stephen as a year-round destination for walkers while supporting the local economy and improving access for residents and visitors alike.
Encouraging people to get outdoors
The group organises a wide range of guided walks throughout the year, catering for all abilities. Regular activities include short weekly “Dawdles” walks, longer monthly “Legstretchers” and special guided events celebrating local heritage, wildlife and landscapes. These walks provide opportunities for people to stay active, meet others and explore the area’s unique countryside in a friendly and welcoming environment.
Looking after local paths
Alongside promoting walking, volunteers work throughout the year to monitor public rights of way, report maintenance issues and improve walking infrastructure. The group collaborates with local authorities, landowners and community organisations to ensure paths remain accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Projects have included creating accessible walking routes, developing new walking guides and supporting initiatives such as the popular Bench Walks map, helping people of all abilities enjoy shorter, more accessible walks around Kirkby Stephen.
Supporting the local community
Walkers are Welcome is about much more than walking. The organisation works closely with Kirkby Stephen Town Council, local businesses, accommodation providers and community groups to promote sustainable tourism throughout the Upper Eden Valley.
By encouraging visitors to explore the area throughout the year, the group helps support local shops, cafés, pubs, accommodation providers and other rural businesses while showcasing the area’s natural beauty and heritage.
Looking ahead
The volunteers continue to develop new walking opportunities, conservation projects and community partnerships that encourage healthy lifestyles and responsible access to the countryside. Through events, guided walks and practical improvements to local paths, Kirkby Stephen & District Walkers are Welcome is helping ensure the Upper Eden Valley remains a welcoming destination for walkers of all ages and abilities.
By combining community volunteering with a passion for the local landscape, the group demonstrates how walking can strengthen communities, support rural economies and encourage more people to enjoy Cumbria’s outstanding countryside.
