Lazonby Swimming Pool has been at the heart of the local community since opening in 1964. Built through a community fundraising campaign and supported by volunteers ever since, the outdoor heated pool provides a safe place for children to learn to swim while offering a valued recreational facility for residents and visitors alike.
Community-led from the beginning
The pool was created following a campaign led by local headteacher John Hume, who recognised the need for safer swimming facilities for local schoolchildren. Built with donations and support from the communities of Lazonby, Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld, it continues to maintain close links with local schools, many of which use the pool for swimming lessons each year.
Today, the pool is managed by the volunteer-run Lazonby and District Swimming Pool Association, supported by qualified lifeguards and staff who help keep the facility running throughout the summer season.
A place for everyone
Open from May to September, the pool offers a range of activities for all ages, including:
- Public swimming sessions
- Adult-only lane swims
- Swimming lessons and school sessions
- Private pool hire for families and groups
- Community events and seasonal activities
The site also includes a toddler pool, picnic area, campsite and play facilities, making it a popular destination for both local families and visitors exploring the Eden Valley.
Sustainability at its heart
Lazonby Pool has a long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability. The pool is heated using a ground source heat pump that draws energy from the nearby River Eden, while solar panels provide hot water for the shower facilities. The committee continues to explore further renewable energy improvements to reduce operating costs and environmental impact.
Powered by volunteers
Volunteers remain central to the success of the pool. They support everything from welcoming swimmers and running the kiosk to organising events, maintaining the site and helping manage the adjoining campsite. Their dedication enables this much-loved community facility to continue serving local people year after year.
As a registered charity, Lazonby Swimming Pool exists to promote swimming, healthy recreation and community wellbeing. Through the commitment of volunteers, staff and supporters, it continues to provide opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, learn new skills and enjoy one of Cumbria’s most distinctive outdoor community facilities.
