Sharing Your Views – ACT Rural Survey

12th March 2025

Thanks to everyone who completed the ACT Rural Issues Survey and to those who attended the feedback session held on 27th February. The discussion provided valuable insight into the issues facing rural communities across Cumbria and helped shape the next stage of ACT's campaigning and community engagement work. :contentReference[oaicite:0]

The survey results reinforced the key messages already emerging from earlier analysis. Respondents overwhelmingly identified affordable housing and transport as the most significant challenges facing rural communities. Poverty was recognised as a more complex issue, often hidden from view and closely linked to housing costs, transport accessibility and the additional costs associated with rural living. :contentReference[oaicite:1]

Participants were also asked about the strengths of their communities and the services, projects and organisations that help communities thrive. Many respondents highlighted the importance of village halls as places for activities, support and social connection. Other valued initiatives included:

  • Warm spaces and community hubs
  • Volunteer-run transport schemes
  • Community housing projects
  • Local pubs, post offices and schools
  • Oil buying syndicates
  • Community newsletters
  • Volunteer-run library services
  • Food banks and emergency response volunteers

Respondents also recognised the contribution made by a range of local organisations and partnerships, including Cumbria Action for Sustainability, Northern Fells Group, Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, West Cumbria Rivers Trust, Cumbria CVS and Cumbria Community Foundation. :contentReference[oaicite:3]

Many people highlighted the positive role that active parish councils can play in supporting local projects and services. Examples included helping sustain local bus routes, supporting community transport initiatives, developing play areas, undertaking housing needs assessments and planning for the long-term future of communities. :contentReference[oaicite:4]

The discussion session also explored potential campaign messages. Key themes included:

  • Increasing the supply of affordable homes for local people.
  • Creating better integrated and accessible transport services.
  • Providing greater support for community-led projects.
  • Encouraging agencies and authorities to work alongside communities when planning change.
  • Ensuring rural voices are heard by decision makers at every level.

ACT will continue using the survey findings to champion rural issues and influence future policy discussions, including those connected to devolution and the future governance of Cumbria. The organisation is keen to continue hearing from communities and welcomes invitations to speak with local groups about the survey findings and future campaign priorities. :contentReference[oaicite:6]
